As the seasons change and we head into fall (which quickly turns into freezing winter weather in most places, amiright?), our cravings for light, refreshing fruits and vegetables shift to heavy carbs and fatty meats. We trade in our bikinis and beach towels for wool blankets and candles, thus triggering the uptick of takeout orders and pizza and pasta nights. And we all know what that means...
I have some good news, though! Because I believe that long term sustainable healthy habits take time, patience and commitment to develop, the last thing I want you to do is to restrict yourself or feel like you should go on another diet during the colder months. Instead, I have a very impactful tip for you.
Your Weekly Wellness Tip: Order or prepare something green with every meal.
You heard me. It's that simple. Don't change your order to a salad. Simply order or make a side salad, steamed or sauteed green veggies, ask for leafy greens or zucchini in your eggs, or pair crudites with your meal. Yes, it will cost you a bit extra money (time if preparing at home), but the boost in fiber, phytonutrients and healthy fats (drizzle a little olive or sesame oil over cooked or raw veggies to help with micronutrient absorption) will keep you fuller longer, help with digestion, give you a dose of cancer-fighting chemicals and help regulate the hormone insulin in your body.
One small step like this can make all the difference in the way you feel physically and emotionally during and after a meal. Try it out! I would love to hear how it goes and if you notice any differences in your eating patterns, digestion or anything else.
